Právníkovi Bryanovi Becketovi zemře teta, se kterou se od dětství vůbec nestýkal. Nikdo se tak nemůže divit, že ho její smrt nijak nazasáhla. Jediné, co Bryana teď zajímá je velký dům, ve kterém teta žila sama. Protože mu to neklape s manželkou a jsou domluvení na krátkém odloučení, rozhodne se, že se do domu odstěhuje na nějakou dobu, aby ho ohodnotil. Jenže hned druhý den za ním přijde jeho kolega se závětí a s tím, že teta dům odkázala nějakému ústavu.
Bryan se tam tedy vydává a setkává se s doktorem, který v poslední době s jeho tetou pracoval. Ona za ním přišla s tím, že v domě straší. Bryan je zapřisáhlý ateista a odmítá věřit čemukoliv nadpřirozenému. Ovšem jen do té doby, než uslyší hlasy volající jeho jméno a poukazující na nějakou truhlu. Když to napříště vypráví doktorovi, je mu vysvětleno, že lidská mysl je schopná přegenerovat zvuky, aby něco znamenaly. Jenže Bryan další noc vidí na schodech uvnitř domu ženu. To už mu asi jen tak někdo nevysvětlí…
Celkově je příběh docela strašidelný, zvláště pak, pokud věříte v nadpřirozeno. Ovšem nejvíc mě na tomhle filmu asi překvapil jeho závěr. Úplné překvapení to nebylo, pokud shlížíte jeden horor za druhým, ale přecejenom je to rozřešení dané situace překvapivé. Ale zase celkový závěr ubírá celému filmu na kvalitě. Jako by byl film bez konce, i když konec vlastně má…
